I used this title to review a book my great-grandmother wrote and had published titled, "Just Molly." Her name was Marguerite Nye Bell and the book was published in 1980. A frequent speaker at schools and libraries, Tripp has also spoken at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, The New York Historical Society, and Williamsburg. Currently, Tripp is writing a STEM series for National Geographic and adapting Greek Myths for Starry Forest Publishing. Film dramatizations of the lives of Samantha, Felicity, Molly, and Kit have been based on her stories. She also wrote the "Best Friends" character stories to date, plays, mysteries, and short stories about all her characters. For that series, Tripp wrote all the books about Felicity, Josefina, Kit, Molly, and Maryellen and many of the books about Samantha. Right out of college, Tripp started writing songs, stories, and nonfiction for The Superkids Reading Program, working with Pleasant Rowland, the founder of American Girl. Her husband teaches history at Montgomery College. Since 1985 she has lived in Silver Spring, Maryland. A member of the first co-educated class at Yale University, Tripp also has a M.Ed. She grew up in Mount Kisco, New York with three sisters and one brother. Valerie Tripp is a children's book author, best known for her work with the American Girl series.

Tagaste, now Souk-Ahras, about 60 miles from Bona (ancient Hippo-Regius), was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia which had recently been converted from Donatism. From his birth to his conversion (354-386)Īugustine was born at Tagaste on 13 November, 354. We will confine ourselves to sketching the three periods of this great life: (1) the young wanderer's gradual return to the Faith (2) the doctrinal development of the Christian philosopher to the time of his episcopate and (3) the full development of his activities upon the Episcopal throne of Hippo. Augustine's life is unfolded to us in documents of unrivaled richness, and of no great character of ancient times have we information comparable to that contained in the "Confessions", which relate the touching story of his soul, the "Retractations," which give the history of his mind, and the "Life of Augustine," written by his friend Possidius, telling of the saint's apostolate. Written at a time of perennial political upheaval in France, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is the product of an emerging democratic sensibility and prefigures the teeming masterpiece Les Misé rables, which Hugo would write thirty years later. Hugo set his epic tale in the Paris of 1482 under Louis XI and meticulously re-created theĭay-to-day life of its highest and lowest inhabitants. It has tempted filmmakers, and most recently animators, who have exploited its dramatic content to good effect but have inevitably lost some of the grays that make the original text so compelling.įrom Victor Hugo's flamboyant imagination came Quasimodo, the grotesque bell ringer La Esmeralda, the sensuous gypsy dancer and the haunted archdeacon Claude Frollo. The story and characters in Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame have resonated with succeeding generations since its publication in 1831. It is completely delightful, too, that Bagieu includes Giorgina Reid, who in the 1970s managed to preserve a section of the Long Island coastline and the lighthouse that still stands on it by constructing, almost single-handedly, a vast series of terraces made from sand and reeds.īut perhaps the woman who fascinated me most of all was Frances Glessner Lee. What names to pick out? It was amazing to learn that the movie star Hedy Lamarr was also a noted inventor (bored with acting, she invented a radio that could not be jammed, the better to help US troops during the war) and I thrilled to the rise of Nzinga, the queen who ruthlessly ruled Ndongo and Matamba (present day-Angola) in the 17th century (she murdered her own brother to get there).
